In an attempt to discover structural relationships in the book, Longacre's techniques of studying discourse were applied to the Greek text of James. This paper grows out of a class project in text analysis taught by Robert Longacre. The book of James is a clear example of a hortatory text in Koiné Greek however, it does not follow a linear progression from one idea to another, but rather presents a collection of exhortations which Nida has described as related by 'stream of consciousness' (1983:116).
